Hello everybody. A little housekeeping before I get to the meat of things. It`s been a very long time since I`ve touched this blog and I apologize for that. Being a dad and general life stuff stole most of my attention for quite a long time now. Until just the other day an up and coming filmmaker in the underground Brandon Terry announced that his new film Pseudosnuff film Deviant is in the rough cutting phase and asked for potential reviewers. As a huge fan of the Pseudosnuff subgenre I chimed in thinking it was an off chance. But low and behold, he got back to me almost immediately with a friendly message and a digital copy. I don`t mean to suck up but thanks a lot Brandon. This was just the boost I needed to get back into this. But now for the main event Deviant!

Deviant is a short but sweet little Pseudosnuff venture which follows the home videos of two friends as they document some things they do in their downtime. The opening scene immediately put a smile on my face as the one holding the camera arrives home, heads to the basement and finds his pig mask wearing friend raping their captive as she cries and begs. A nice grim way to open the film and a lovely homage to the August Underground films, an influence which Deviant wears on it`s sleeve (and this is a very good thing!.) The chill nonchalance of these guys throughout the film gives it a very nice eerie feel. Like this is just an everyday thing to them. At one point the two are just kicking back on the couch and talking work and other such mundanities as their lady captive begs for her life in the background, which was wonderfully unsettling. Deviant has a nice habit of cutting from mundane to morbid in seconds. From the skating at the skatepark to disemboweling a woman, from the cameraman and his friend petting his dogs to them laughing and joking as they mutilate a fetus like two kids pulling the wings off a butterfly. And as a new father this part was pretty brutal. Which is great!

I enjoyed Deviant quite a lot. I am more than honored to have seen and reviewed it. Brandon Terry has done a great job on this one. I cant wait to see the final release and would LOVE to see this expanded upon in some way. I felt thick red and pungent potential oozing out of every crevice of this film. Great job Brandon! I can`t wait to see what`s next.
