The Last Horror Movie

The Last Horror Movie. Simply put not enough people know about this film. With the over abundance of Found Footage Films in recent decades, most of which being cheap and abysmally executed rip offs of The Blair Witch Project everyone seems to be trying to make the genre scary again (well that or a quick buck). However, there are several unsung heroes to be found within the mostly stagnant genre. One of which being The Last Horror Movie.

The Last Horror Movie has a brilliantly simple premise which packs a far harder punch than the aforementioned paranormal snoozefestst. It follows a serial killer named Max who, with the aid of his homeless assistant records a video diary of his reign of terror while day-lighting as a wedding photographer. He then tapes this film over random copies of a crappy slasher film in video stores so that people will stumble on it. Between brutal murders Max talks to the camera about his philosophies and constantly questions the audience as to why they are still watching, giving us a haunting look in the mirror at our own natural curiosity and selfish hypocrisies within our morals. He also discusses methods, ways to avoid capture as well as a look into his very charismatic and deceptively friendly personality, giving the film a healthy dose of black comedy to go with the killing and dark moral questions.

The Last Horror Movie is a delightfully eerie and dark experience. Max is a legitimately entertaining character, downright fun. This coupled with the way he toys with the audience, such as in one scene where he has two victims tied up. He then kills one, while his assistant faces the camera towards the other, meaning we don`t see the killing. It then cuts to him asking if we are frustrated and want to see what happened, he then shows us what we didn`t see before and says "Did you really want to see that? If not... Why are you still watching?". That was brilliantly sadistic and confronting in an unusual way. His fun personality and his cheeky ways of piquing our morbid curiosity so cleverly conveys his question to the audience as to if we are really any better than he is.

The Last Horror Movie is one damn fine horror film and a breath of fresh air in the Found Footage genre that I think is very underrated. I believe that The Last Horror movie, as well as August Underground, The Butcher and American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore are the unsung heroes of the genre. If you are thinking otherwise then just think. Which would be scarier footage to "find" in a bin or on an abandoned memory stick, an apparent ghost opening and closing doors for two hours? Or a grotesque murder that you have no way of proving isn`t a snuff film.
