Violence Jack

Violence Jack! One of the most brutal and depraved pieces of animation the world has ever seen. Created by one of Japan`s most beloved boundary pushers, Manga writer and illustrator Go Nagai. Who is more famed for creations such as the Mecha classic Mazinger Z and the Fantasy Horror classic Devilman. Violence Jack however stands apart from his work. Today I will only be discussing the OVA (Original Video Animation) adaptations rather than the Manga as excellent as it is.

I received the OVA collection for my birthday this year and have been madly in love with them ever since. Violence Jack is most infamous for its gore, sex and other adult themes. Back in the late 80s and early 90s when the OVA`s were released animation was seen as a children`s medium by the mass public. So I can imagine this was a nasty shock for those folks when Violence Jack hit store shelves.

Violence Jack takes place in the most bleak and treacherous post apocalyptic setting I`ve ever seen. After a devistating natural disaster known to survivors as the Kanto Hellquake. The Kanto region of Japan is cut off from the rest of the world and plunged head first into a chaotic wasteland. Where the strong mercilessly pray upon the weak and honest, and all is ruled with an iron fist by the Slum King and the endless hordes of raiders and bandits. All hope seems lost in this hell on earth until one day, a towering giant of a man apears. Teeth like the fangs of a Tiger and the strength of ten men. This nameless behemoth has no name but carries a large razor sharp Jack Knife and his methods of dispensing justice are not for the faint of heart or stomach, thus he is dubbed Violence Jack!

These stories are not for the faint of heart. There are depictions of rape, cannibalism, the most harrowing chainsaw scene I have ever witnessed and a ton of other nasty stuff. From saving a group of sex slaves from their gangster captives, protecting a group of woman trapped underground from the ravenous, sex starved men and murderous gangsters, to rescuing a village from an army of brutal thugs. These films have it all!

Violence Jack has quickly become one of my favorite anime of all time as well as some of my favorite films of all time. If you have the stomach for them I highly recommend these OVA`s. They are not too hard to find or even all that pricey. So go buy em and watch em if you dare.
